Police in Ohio on Sunday rescued a 6-year-old girl with autism from a pond after she wandered away from home.
The girls family had been searching for an hour when they called the Blue Ash Police Department for help Sunday afternoon. Officers responded and searched the area, locating the girl in waist-deep water in a pond less than an hour later.
Body-worn camera videos shared by the police department show officers gathered at the pond. Radio chatter indicates officers are waiting for a boat to use to reach the girl, who is far out from the shore in what appears to be chest-high water. They express concern that if they go in after her, she might wade farther out into deeper water.
“If she looks in distress at all we gotta go,” an officer says. Officers call her name and try to coax her to shore, but she doesnt respond. At least two officers appear to remove their gear and get ready to enter the pond as the girl moves from chest-high water to neck-high water.
Officer Tim Bittner entered the pond and brought the girl safely back to shore. She was treated by EMS and returned to her family, police said.
