Escaped bomber Porfirio Duarte-Herrera was recaptured in Nevada on Thursday after he was spotted by an alert citizen, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said. Duarte-Herrera is serving a life sentence after being convicted of planting a bomb in a coffee cup and killing a hot dog stand vendor on the Las Vegas Strip in 2007. Officers at the Southern Desert Correctional Center near Las Vegas discovered Duarte-Herreras escape Tuesday. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak said in a statement that investigation revealed Duarte-Herrera had in fact been missing since “early in the weekend.” He ordered the Nevada Department of Corrections to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the escape. Duarte-Herrera was spotted in Las Vegas Thursday trying to board a shuttle to the border, according to a statement from police. The witness alerted 911. A video released by LVMPD show patrol officers apprehending him “moments later.” Duarte-Herrera tells an officer he was heading for Tijuana, Mexico. Sisolak on Friday requested and received the resignation of NDOC Director Charles Daniels. Deputy Director of Operations William Gittere will serve as acting director of NDOC.
