New York City Police are searching for multiple suspects in connection with vandalism at the Stonewall National Monument on Saturday.
According to police, the suspects were walking in Christopher Park, across the street from the historic Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, at around 3:10 a.m. Saturday. They allegedly broke multiple LGBTQIA+ flags that were displayed on a fence.
Surveillance video released by the NYPD shows at least two suspects in the area.
In the summer of 1969, police raids at the Stonewall Inn, a popular LGBT bar, sparked the Stonewall Uprising, a turning point in the movement for LGBT rights. Thousands of people filled the streets, and the park, over the course of several days to protest the police raids.
In 1999, the Stonewall Inn became the first LGBT landmark to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The site, including the adjacent Christopher Park, was designated as Stonewall National Monument in 2016.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
