Rescue of elderly woman with broken hip trapped in her burning home by persevering deputies unequipped with fire safety gear in Cunningham, VA

Recently released video shows the heroic efforts of three sheriffs deputies in Virginia who rescued an immobile 83-year-old trapped in a house fire.A 911 caller reported the fire on Old Fork Lane in the Cunningham area of Fluvanna County on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at around 5:30 a.m. Fluvanna County Sheriffs deputies arrived on scene about eight minutes later and found smoke pouring from the home.Body-camera video released Monday by the sheriffs office shows the first deputys arrival at the residence, as he approaches the home and opens the front door. Thick smoke pours out, and the deputy shouts, “Hello! Where you at?”A voice can be heard inside, and the deputy gets down to try to get below the smoke, but goes back outside to radio for assistance. “Theres heavy, heavy smoke in here. Im having a tough time trying to get to her,” he says.The deputy walks around to a back door and forces it open. Smoke pours out, and the voice inside can be heard again. The deputy enters and quickly begins coughing from the smoke, and soon rushes outside for air.The deputy goes back in and begins pulling the entire bed toward the door. After exiting for air and re-entering multiple times, more deputies arrive to help him wrangle a wheelchair and help the resident into it.The deputy can be heard choking on the smoke, coughing severely.Rescue squads and firefighters arrived on scene. The resident and Deputies Frank Harris Jr., William White, and Jordan Seay-Allen were all treated for smoke inhalation and transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center, the sheriffs office said.The residence is likely a total loss, according to the sheriffs office, and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.The cause of the fire is under investigation.
