Beachgoers in South Florida were rescued on Memorial Day Monday after they became stranded on the jetty rocks at Fort Pierce Inlet State Park.
Body-worn camera video shared by the St. Lucie County Sheriffs Office shows the SLCSO Marine Unit and a SWAT medic assisting several stranded beachgoers shortly before noon with the help of the St. Lucie County Fire District and a nearby lifeguard.
The stranded swimmers can be seen along the jagged, slippery North Jetty rocks, and they board the rescue boats.
“Unfortunately, what transpired yesterday happens far too often when swimmers dont take into account the dangers that the slippery North Jetty rocks and swift current pose,” Sheriff Ken Mascara said in a statement. “While we strongly encourage all beachgoers to stay clear of these rocks for their safety, we are also thankful there were no serious injuries in this incident.”
